Present Continuous Tense – Easy and Complete Guide


In the previous blog, we explained the present simple tense. Now in this blog, we will understand the present continuous tense. Tenses are the most important part of learning English; they are the foundation of English. If we learn all 12 tenses properly, then we too will be able to understand and speak English like others. Nowadays, English is at the top in every field, and learning English has become essential for everyone.

Let’s understand the present continuous tense in very simple words with examples.


Introduction:


When a task is happening at this very moment in the present time, or is frequently happening these days, or is happening around the present time, then it is called the Present Continuous Tense.

That means if a task is currently going on, we will use this tense.


When to Use Present Continuous Tense?


Use of Present Continuous Tense:


1. When a task is happening right now

Example: I am learning the tense.



2. When a task is happening today or is temporary

Example: She is learning tenses these days.



3. When a task is planned in the near future (confirmed future plan)

Example: We are going to Karachi tomorrow.



🔧 Structure (Sentence Formation):


Positive Sentence:


Subject + is/am/are + verb 1st form (ing) + object


I: am

He/she/it/name: is

We/you/they: are


Examples:


I am learning tense.


She is writing lesson.


They are going to market.


Ahmed is watching TV.




Negative Sentence:


Subject + is/am/are + not + verb 1st form (ing) + object


Examples:


I am not eating food.


He is not writing lesson.


We are not going to market right now.


She is not talking right now.



Interrogative Sentence:


Is/am/are + subject + verb 1st form (ing) + object?


Examples:


Are you reading book?


Is she going to the market?


Am I writing it now?


Are they playing now?




Interrogative Negative Sentence:


Is/am/are + subject + not + verb 1st form (ing) + object?


Examples:


Am I not eating food?


Is she not writing lesson?


Are they not playing game?


Are we not going to school?



Common Verbs + ing Form:

Read   Reading

Write  Writing

Eat           Eating

Play    Playing

Watch   Watching

Cook   Cooking

Work   Working

Do            Doing

Look    Looking



> Note: In present continuous tense, it is necessary to add ing with the verb.





Helpful Tips:


“Am” is only used with I.


“Is” is used with singular subjects (he, she, it, name).


“Are” is used with plural subjects (you, we, they).


While adding “ing”, some spelling changes occur, such as:


Write → Writing


Come → Coming


Run → Running (Double the last letter if the short word ends with consonant-vowel-consonant)




Practice Sentences:


1. I ______ (is/am/are, read) now.



2. She _____ (is/am/are, learn) English.



3. Are you _____ (learn) English?



4. _____ they _____ (is/am/are, play) cricket?



5. _____ he not _____ (is/am/are, write) lesson?



Conclusion:


Present continuous tense is used whenever a task is in progress. This tense is very useful in daily English speaking — whether you are talking to someone, expressing an action, or discussing a plan. With daily practice, this tense can be learned easily.
